NY Governor Eliot Spitzer drops "Licenses for Illegals" plan

New York Governor Eliot Spitzer announced this week that he is dropping a controversial plan to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants because of overwhelming opposition to the policy.

"I am not willing to fight to the bitter end on something that will not ultimately be implemented," Spitzer said, "and we also have an enormous agenda on other issues of great importance to New York State that was being stymied by the constant and almost singular focus on this issue."

Senate Republican leader Joseph Bruno said on Wednesday that Governor Spitzer abandoned his plan to give licenses to illegal aliens because the people of this state abandoned him and overwhelmingly said he was wrong.

An estimated 12 million illegal immigrants currently reside in the United States.
